Emerald Green Arborvitae - Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd'

emerald-green-arborvitae.jpg

Emerald Green Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd') is a popular evergreen known for its dense, pyramidal shape and vibrant green foliage that lasts year-round. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, requires moist but well-drained soil, and is drought-tolerant once established.

These trees commonly grow from 10 to 15 feet although rarely up to 20 feet tall. Emerald Greens are commonly used for privacy screens, hedges, or accent plants. They are resistant to most pests and diseases, making them a low-maintenance choice for landscaping. Bag worms and spider mites can be a periodic issue and heavy snow can damage branches, so brushing off snow after storms is recommended.

Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae - Thuja plicata ‘Green Giant’

The Green Giant is the fastest growing Arborvitae available. It grows to a height of 50-60’ and a spread of 10-15’ at maturity. Very rapid grower – 3’ per year or more. Best grown in moist, fertile, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerates somewhat wide range of soils and some dry conditions. Best in full sun but generally appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates such as the Kansas City area.

For screens, plant trees 5-6’ apart. Plant trees further apart for other uses. Provides nesting sites for a wide range of birds and small animals. More resistant to deer browsing than other arborvitae.
